X2 Interviews

Rico Holmes, Graphic Artist

What titles have you worked on in the past?

Mmmm - before team 17 I did some conversion work with a company I wouldn't care to mention now. Then there was "Miami Chase" which Andreas and I sold to Codemasters, before we started up with Team17.

The full list reads:

  • Full Contact
  • Alien Breed
  • Alien Breed Special edition
  • Project X
  • Superfrog
  • Alien Breed 2

What work have you been most proud of, and what has been most critically acclaimed?

Ahhh Now that would be the original Project X.. but that sounds like I'm trying to sell X2 doesn't it?
It really did push the most out of the Amiga at the time and seems to be the game I get most acclaim for. To be fair though, I think it's far easier to paint impressive graphics when seen from a side-on point of view rather than overhead or perspective based. You have a little more freedom to be creative that way; with overhead graphics you spent most of your time just trying to get things recognisable.

You created the graphics on the original Project X. What's different about the graphics for the Playstation? Does the extra freedom inspire you to better things?

Oh yes! Again, many of the limitations are removed, but that's not to say they're not there.
The biggest difference with the Playstation is the extra high colour palette available. There's also the hardware rotation for clockwise and anticlockwise motion removing the necessity for pre-animating that kind of movement. You also have a few nice in-built features; like various modes of transparency and object distortion via polygon points, which all lend to an interesting palette of effects for what we do.

How many enemies including bosses can a player expect to see/kill if they play the game all the way through?

Grief. I honestly don't know anymore- I've lost count! What I can say is that there is never one enemy graphic repeated in the entire game. I reckon there's about 150 in there now.

Other members of the X2 team have expressed amazement at your ability to constantly come up with new Enemy Ship designs. Where do you draw your inspiration from? What are your influences - science fiction, film, novels, what? Who?

Lego ! (sheepish grin). Honestly, Lego. I used to love playing with the stuff as a kid and I tend to build my models or objects with the same construction principles in mind. I like to think that it helps to give things a more convincingly solid look, but maybe that's just my excuse for playing with Lego. All the usual channels of movies and books do influence me of course- particularly the early stuff the publisher "Paper Tiger" used to put out.

Do you think the increased graphic power of the Playstation will improve the gameplaying experience of the gamer? Why?

Absolutely, but it depends on the games at the end of the day to take advantage. Great graphics won't make a poor game more playable, but they can vastly improve on the effect of being submersed in the environment of 3D based games. It's getting there

Martyn (Brown) is already on record as saying that you must be one of the best computer graphics artist's in the world. Any commment?

Shucks... he's already married.
No seriously, there's a HUGE amount of talent out there that's far superior to my work. It's a pity that most gets missed, or the artists aren't too familiar with the quirks and advantages with computer based art and animation. Technophobia has a LOT to answer for!

If you could change anything about the Playstation, what would it be?

Extra memory cartridges. There is a limitation to the amount of texture maps you can use, and texture maps are important to the realism of 3D graphics. There's often the case that there's room left over on the CD for 2 versions of a game;with or without extra memory.

It's been stated that there is an almost intuitive empathy between the members of the X2 team. Any comment?

There is, almost psychic I think someone said. Scary really. It's something that comes from working with your best friends for 7 years and never having ill feelings along the way. I guess Alcohol helps.
